“TIMELESS”

Modernist,Vintage and Antique Art with Their Contemporary Counterparts

WHEN: August 7th - September 7th

OPENING RECEPTION:

Opens Thursday, August 14th from 5:30-8:30 with a panel discussion between select artists (including Alysanne McGaffey and Fernando Reyes) to occur at 6pm.

WHAT:
Reaves focuses on discovering contemporary artists. In contrast, Lost Art Salon focuses on re-discovering artists from the past. The two have come together to co-curate, “Timeless”, which merges modernist, vintage and antique art with their contemporary counterparts. The show will be hosted at Reaves Gallery in Hayes Valley. The intention of the show is to both present a progression of styles and mediums from the early 1900s through the present day, and to show the ways in which artists continue to draw references and inspiration from the past. An example of a pairing will include Mid-Century Bay Area Figurative work by Alysanne McGaffey contrasted with contemporary figurative paintings by Fernando Reyes.

WHO:
Artists will include Alysanne McGaffey, Fernando Reyes, Richard Van Wingerden, Annie Galvin, Maggy Aldrich, Jerome, Victor Vaserely, Phillip Dvorak, Clyde I. Seavey, Kristen Tradowsky, Richard Karwoski, Pete Doolittle, Harriet Roudebush, David Imlay, Ross Curtis and others.

“Better Than Beautiful:
New Works by Phillip Dvorak”

Reaves Gallery is pleased to present “Better than Beautiful,” a solo exhibition of new works by Phillip Dvorak.  The exhibition scheduled for July 11th – August 3rd marks Dvorak’s first showing with the gallery
.

"Better than Beautiful" explores the blurring of boundaries--between man, woman, beast, life and death -- and the fantastic possibilities of transformation. This new body of abstract and figurative work expands on the ideas explored in Dvorak's previous collections "Earthquake Weather" and "The Bone Garden." Using strong sexual imagery, these drawings, etchings, and photomontages challenge viewers to consider their own notions of boundaries, desire, and perhaps the idea of beauty itself.

"Our goal is to break through and rethink some of the stereotypes, labels, and traditional definitions of beauty," explains Reaves. "The show encourages us to explore the gap between what we think we see and what's actually there--and allows the viewer the chance to reconcile that dissonance."

An opening reception is scheduled for Friday, July 18th, from 6 to 9 p.m. Dvorak will be present to meet and discuss his work with the public. The reception is free and open to all.

A Grand (re) OpeningFeaturing Works by Blair Bradshaw and Matthew Frederick

Reaves Gallery celebrates their move to Hayes Valley with their inaugural exhibit featuring new bodies of work by principal artists Blair Bradshaw and Matthew Frederick. This exhibition will open on June 6, 2008 and will run through July 7, 2008. There will be an opening reception Friday June 20th from 6-9 p.m.

Bradshaw’s new body of work holds an emphasis in classic Victorian and Modern cultural imagery. Taking the Victorian elegance and the Modern aggressiveness, he re-examines their contrasting relationship. The use of rich bold colors and shining metallics make these images striking and hard to keep your eye from.

Frederick’s paintings are characterized by, a careful balance of structure, cool striking colors, and heavy mood. His compositions are rendered with generous applications of paint and undulating brushstrokes, lending to a compelling emulation of the patterns and sensations inherent in nature. With this current body of work Fredrick takes his color palette in a cooler direction, creating more serene atmospheres.

Gallery owner, Sharon Reaves,is excited to welcome everyone to their new location, saying, ”It feels like wemoved from a dorm room and have our first grown up space. The past year onMarket Street has been amazing but we are excited to invite everyone to our newpermanent location in Hayes Valley and I am so proud to present a space for theartists and collectors that is worthy of the quality of our collection”

An opening reception is scheduled for Friday, June 20th, from 6 to 9 p.m. The artistswill be present to meet and discuss their work with the public. The receptionis free and open to all.
